Often hidden from eyesight beneath our everyday world, Water Management Systems are everywhere and need to be operational almost 24/7. MSI's Fluids Engineering Team can accurately predict complex flows for these structures whether they are temporary flood control systems or new construction projects.
In this case study the customer required to implement a temporary stop log in a channel to lower water levels downstream in order to carry out construction work. To ensure the safety of the construction site the dynamic load (and subsequent structural integrity) on the temporary stop log had to be predicted for a worst case flood event. MSI's Fluid Engineering Group carried out a transient CFD analysis in STAR-CCM+ for a flood event modelling the free flow and monitoring the predicted loads on the structure.
The video above shows the simulated flood event tracking pressure and load on a flood control device as well as downstream flow rate. The predicted peak loads were used to determine structural stresses encountered by the plank and its mounting points. The peak loads were found to be withing the recommended limits.
