VibVue® Version 4.2 - Release

VibVue®'s last major summer release introduced our Warp Speed high-frequency engine and broke the frame-rate barrier that had existed in video-based vibration amplification technology since its inception. This summer, we’re expanding Warp Speed’s capabilities to Modal Analysis mode for experimental modal analysis (impact) testing. On top of that, VibVue® 4.2 introduces a new Inspection Mode for rotating equipment that “freezes” machinery systems and components for real-time condition assessment during operation at a safer standoff distance versus strobe-light methods. These modes further expand VibVue® Pro users’ toolkits — now containing four distinct recording modes for monitoring equipment systems.

Warp Speed Comes to Modal Analysis Impact Testing

When MSI launched Warp Speed last year, we solved the problem that has limited all camera-based vibration analysis since the technology first emerged: the camera’s frame rate set a hard ceiling on the frequencies that could be evaluated. Faults living above that ceiling were simply out of reach without brute-forcing the problem with very high frame rates from extremely expensive high-speed cameras. Warp Speed broke through that barrier, letting VibVue® users capture and magnify vibration at frequencies far beyond the optical sensor’s (i.e., camera’s) native frame rate (up to 10,000 Hz).

With 4.2, that same engine now powers Modal Analysis mode.

For anyone who performs modal (impact) tests, the implications are significant. Traditional modal analysis testing means utilizing several triaxial accelerometers on the non-operating or operating machinery train structure or machinery component while carefully measuring each accelerometer’s location and impact response. These methods also require managing the geometric and vibration data, the cables, channel labels, and potential mass-loading effects on smaller objects. VibVue®’s visual approach already replaced that sensor array with millions of measurement points captured in a single frame from a safe standoff distance.  What it couldn’t do, until now, was reach the higher-order modes sitting above the frame-rate limit. Our testing demonstrated that higher-order modes such as nozzle, blade, or vane pass frequencies for turbines, pumps, and compressors can be achieved, as well as even higher frequencies up to 10,000 Hz.

VibVue® users can now capture mode shapes at frequencies in the kilohertz range — full-field, non-contact, and without adding a gram of mass to the structure. Paired with our trigger hardware for impact testing, VibVue® 4.2 delivers the most advanced and capable high-frequency visual modal testing system on the market.

If your work involves higher-frequency applications such as high-speed turbomachinery and related piping systems, or any structure whose critical modes live above 150 Hz, this release was built for you.

Introducing Inspection Mode

The second headline feature in 4.2 does something that has to be seen to be believed: it freezes rotating equipment, in real time, while the machine is running. For decades, the answer to “I need to see that component while it’s running” was a stroboscope — a tool that demands careful tuning, produces a flickering view, and can put the inspector uncomfortably close to rotating machinery. Inspection Mode replaces that workflow with a camera at a safe standoff distance and a stable, recordable image you can zoom, review, and share.

Inspection Mode synchronizes the camera capture to the target’s rotational speed automatically. This allows the user to focus on the equipment as it is frozen in space. Micro adjustments can be made to gradually rotate the equipment, or quickly snap-rotate in either direction. The result on screen is a shaft, coupling, structural component, etc., that appears to stand still while spinning at full operating speed. No strobe light, no shutdown, no disassembly — just a live, stabilized view of hardware that would otherwise be a blur.

The applications are immediately practical:

  • Shaft condition — inspect keyways, coupling hardware, and shaft surfaces for damage, looseness, or fretting while the machine operates.
  • Blade inspection — view cooling tower fans, impellers, and rotor blades individually for cracks, fouling, erosion, or deposit buildup without taking the asset offline.
  • Coupling behavior — watch how coupling elements actually move under load, catching problems that only appear at operating speed.
  • Aging plant and pre-outage planning assessments — quickly evaluate foundations, floors, baseplates, and pipe support/piping deflection in real time.

The Four Recording Modes of VibVue® Pro

With Inspection Mode joining the lineup, VibVue® Pro now offers four distinct recording modes — a complete visual diagnostic toolkit in a single platform:

  • Standard Recording — the core Motion Magnification workflow. Capture, magnify, filter, and analyze vibration across an entire machine or structure, with every pixel acting as a measurement point.
  • Live Analysis — real-time magnification and FFT analysis in the field, with ISO and Energy Institute chart overlays for on-the-spot severity assessment.
  • Modal Analysis — full-field visual modal testing, now supercharged by Warp Speed for high-frequency mode capture.
  • Inspection Mode — new in 4.2, rotationally synchronized viewing that freezes fast-moving components during operation.

Four modes, one camera, one platform. Whatever the question — how much it’s moving, where, at what frequency, what the FFT spectrum looks like, and what the hardware actually looks like right now — VibVue® Pro has a mode built to answer it.

Multi-Band Time-Domain Filtering

Real-world vibration problems rarely arrive one at a time. A motor might show electrically induced vibration at line frequency, a mechanical fault at running speed, and a bearing defect somewhere in between — all overlapping in the same recording.

Multi-band time-domain filtering lets you isolate multiple frequency bands simultaneously in the time domain. Instead of running separate filtered passes and comparing them side by side, you can separate overlapping fault sources in a single workflow — making it dramatically faster to answer the question that matters: which source is driving the motion I’m seeing?

Viewer Mode

Great diagnostic work is only valuable if it reaches the people who act on it. With 4.2, anyone can open and review VibVue® projects in Viewer Mode — without consuming a license.

Reliability managers can review findings on their own computer. Customers can explore the recordings behind a report. Remote analysts can weigh in without a license transfer. The full project data — magnified video, analysis regions, measurements, FFT data — travels with the file, so the insights reach whoever needs them.
