VP OF ENGINEERING

William J. Kelly, PE

William Kelly

As Technical Director, Mr. Kelly performs and manages much of MSI’s advanced finite element analysis (FEA) work. He has also managed several innovative research projects funded by the Department of Defense. His engineering career of 30 years has spanned multiple industries with the common thread being the application of advanced finite element analysis techniques to evaluate the static and dynamic structural performance of components and systems. One of his main focus areas is the stress and vibration analysis of all types of rotating machinery. While at MSI, he was the lead engineer on a design assessment for new stormwater pumping platforms for New Orleans flood control, and for a major ethylene plant compressor train upgrade.

Much of Mr. Kelly’s career has been in the orthopedic industry. While working for a leading orthopedic implant manufacturer he made significant contributions to the design and development of several medical devices. He is a holder of four patents on novel hip replacement and spinal fusion/motion-preserving implants. He has used finite element analysis extensively to predict the strength and behavior of metal and plastic implantable devices including artificial hip and knee replacements, fracture fixation devices, spinal fusion devices, and cardiovascular stents. These analyses typically require the modeling of highly nonlinear behavior, including contacting bodies, plasticity, large deflections, and large strains.

Prior to joining MSI, he worked at the General Motors Proving Ground, CD-adapco, and Howmedica/Stryker. He holds a BS in Engineering Science from Pennsylvania State University, an MSME from Florida Atlantic University, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in The State of NJ.
