Richard J. Cronin
Senior Staff Engineer

Mr. Cronin is a licensed and registered Professional Engineer with over 20 years experience in the design, analysis, and testing of rotating mechanical equipment. He is a former OEM design engineer skilled in all aspects of rotating machinery design including: detail design, GD&T, machine shop practice, DFA/DFM, design of fabrications, design of sand castings, development of patterns, and rapid prototyping. Mr. Cronin honed these skills while at Ingersoll Dresser Pump in the new product development cycle for both the QMN line of vertical turbine solids handling pumps and the MSX line of submersible solids handling pumps. He has been awarded three United States and international patents for his innovative work on these developments projects (see below).

Mr. Cronin was trained in the Ingersoll-Rand new product development process as part of a three man cross-functional team commissioned with developing the MSX solids handling submersible pump/motor combination. He and his team brought the MSX product from marketing concept, through voice of the market survey, competition best practices survey, initial design, design reviews, prototype development, concept testing, DFA/DFM review, cost review, final design, final product testing and validation, third party certification, and into production.

Mr. Cronin also took the MSX product line (submersible motors) through Factory Mutual (FM) and CSA certification (design and testing) as explosion proof for use in Class 1 Division 1 explosive atmospheres. He is familiar with NFPA 70 (National Electric Code) and its application to submersible pumping equipment.

Mr. Cronin is skilled in AutoCAD and has 6500+ hours of experience in Pro/Engineer modeling parts with complex surfaces, top down assemblies, and detailed machine drawings with GD&T. He also has extensive experience in Finite Element Analysis and has applied that knowledge to minimize component testing and warranty issues with new equipment. He has verified analysis work through field-testing of installed units.

Before Ingersoll Dresser Pump, Mr. Cronin was employed as a Marine Engineer with Designers and Planners in Crystal City, Virginia. He worked on a number of projects for NAVSEA, the Coast Guard, and the Military Sealift Command (MSC) including the Arleigh Burke Class destroyers (DDG-51), the NATO frigate, the icebreaker USCGC Polar Sea, the hospital ship USNS Comfort, and the cable layer USNS Zeus. Specific projects included condenser re-tubing, turbo generator replacement, shipboard NBC wash down system, ships power transmission, design manual for gas turbine intakes and uptakes, condition monitoring, and sea trials with vibration measurements.

At MSI Mr. Cronin has used his skills to successfully field-troubleshoot problem equipment, perform FEA to minimize equipment vibration at start-up, and to evaluate equipment versus best practices and customer requirements.

Mr. Cronin co-authored Design Considerations for Non-Clog pumps, which was presented at the 21st International Pump Users Symposium. He is also a co-author of the Mechanical Design and Vibration Chapter of the 4th Edition of the McGraw-Hill Pump Handbook. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park and is a licensed and registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of Maryland.
