James R. Dickey Project
General Manager
Mr. Dickey is a chemical engineer with more than 40 years experience as a consultant on the formulation, quality and applications of
lubricants, lubrication systems, and related chemical specialties. Prior to joining Mechanical Solutions, Inc. he was an independent lubricants consultant,
the North American representative for Optimol Instruments Prüftechnik GmbH, held several key positions over three decades for Exxon Company and
Esso, was the Technical Director for Cooks Industrial Lubricants, and was Chief Chemist for Fremont Industries. Mr. Dickey received his Bachelor of
Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota.
Jim Dickey is an internationally-recognized lubrication expert. He has prepared and presented training courses and seminars for
industry groups around the world concerning energy conservation, machinery lubrication, lubrication fundamentals, tribology testing, and on lubrication
in the steel, mining, sugar and metalworking industries. Jim is past-president and fellow of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE),
and is past chair of the society's New York Section. He has received STLE's P. M. Ku Meritorious Service Medal, and has received a similar award from
ASTM for his activities on their Lubrication Standards committee D-2. His areas of expertise include the lubrication of industrial engines, turbines,
compressors, gear and hydraulic systems, machine tools and other machinery; the formulation, testing and quality management of lubricating oils,
greases and metalworking fluids; the application, maintenance, disposal and recovery of metalworking fluids; lubrication in glass forming, rubber
processing and other industrial processes; lubrication system design and analysis; and lube manufacturing process design and engineering. Jim has
published articles on synthetic fluids, tribology testing, gear oil thermal characteristics and elastomer/fluid interactions. He has been awarded patents
for innovations in cutting oils and fire resistant metal processing fluids.
In addition to his work at MSI in the lubrication area, Jim manages MSI’s successful RPG Defeat project, and is MSI’s Project
General Manager, responsible for the on-time/ on-budget performance of MSI’s various project teams.
