Douglas C. Winfield Principal
Engineer and Principal Programmer
Dr. Winfield has a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Memphis where he concentrated on dynamics and finite
element analysis of composite structures. He has over 16 years experience working in engineering analysis and design R&D, where he has obtained
20 patents in areas of vibration damping, aerodynamic test methods, impact test methods, photogrametrics, image processing, and product design.
Prior to joining MSI, Doug worked as a consultant for a variety of companies, and has been a guest lecturer at several universities and engineering societies.
Dr. Winfield has worked extensively in math modeling and simulation. In addition to his Defense work and turbomachinery prognostics
work MSI, he has he has specialized in engineering applications for the athletic industry. For example, Doug successfully developed complex models for
golf club/ball impact, as well as aerodynamic models of golf balls in flight. He has performed a kinematic and kinetic analysis of the golf swing as well as
a flexible body dynamic analysis of the golf shaft.
Over the past few years, Dr. Winfield has concentrated his work in the areas of computer vision, motion analysis, numerical methods,
and software development. He has written software that has been distributed worldwide. For the Department of Defense, he has developed image processing
algorithms and image registration techniques to accurately measure and calculate the speed and trajectory of incoming rockets and projectiles, for the
purpose of their rapid tracking and defeat. Dr. Winfield is currently active in projects involving computer vision, finite element modeling of fluid-structure
interaction particularly in turbomachinery, and acoustic intensity sensing and evaluation.
