William J. Kelly, PE

Manager of General Engineering Analysis

As an MSI Principal Engineer, Mr. Kelly performs or oversees much of MSI’s technical work, and manages several projects related to the development of predictive maintenance systems for machinery systems, as well as a Navy RPG Defeat system under development. He has a demonstrated mastery of computer simulation tools and the practical experience to apply them to solve real world turbomachinery problems. He has a very strong background in finite element analysis and CFD, as well as project management. He was the principal investigator on a NASA project related to development of optimization software for prediction of aeroelastic response of airfoils. He has a solid analytical and theoretical background in engineering mechanics, and has approximately 25 years experience with finite element analysis and related software.

Much of Mr. Kelly's career has been in the orthopedic industry. While working for a leading orthopedic implant manufacturer he made significant contributions to the design and development of several medical devices. He is a holder of several patents on novel hip replacement and spinal fusion/motion-preserving implants. Mr. Kelly has used finite element analysis extensively to predict the strength and behavior of metal and plastic implantable devices including artificial hip and knee replacements, fracture fixation devices, spinal fusion devices, and cardiovascular stents. Many of these analyses have required the modeling of highly nonlinear behavior including contacting bodies, plasticity, large deflections and large strains. Manufacturers have often submitted his finite element work to the FDA in an effort to demonstrate the structural integrity of the designs, and to shorten their time-to-market. He has also been invited to the operating room to consult on surgical techniques.

Prior to joining MSI he worked at General Motors, Adapco, Howmedica, as well as being an independent consultant. He holds a BS in Engineering Science from Penn State University and an MSME from Florida Atlantic University. He holds four patents and is a licensed Professional Engineer.
