Thomas J. Walter

Principal Engineer, Special Projects & Business Development

As a Principal Engineer at MSI, Mr. Walter’s work includes performance of special projects and business development.  He has been involved with development, testing and evaluation of machinery systems for more than 30 years.  Initially, Mr. Walter served as a vibration test engineer for Newport News Shipbuilding (now Northrop Grumman Newport News), where he implemented and evaluated all aspects of machinery systems onboard US Navy submarines, surface ships, and commercial vessels of all types.  He subsequently moved to Mechanical Technology Incorporated (MTI) where he held various engineering and management positions involved in development and evaluation of rotating machinery systems, including advanced bearings, seals, and gears.  In 1988 Mr. Walter joined Foster-Miller Inc. (FMI, now Qinetiq North America) when MTI sold much of its technology business to FMI.  In 2009 Mr. Walter joined MSI when MSI bought several technologies and businesses from FMI.  Mr. Walter has been active in the development and successful implementation of condition-based machinery maintenance technology for many years, and is a Category IV Vibration Analyst per ISO 18436, a certification held by fewer than 100 people worldwide.  He holds a BSME from the University of Dayton and an MBA from the College of William and Mary.  He is Chairman of the Hudson-Mohawk chapter of the Vibration Institute.
