MSI performs design, analysis, and testing of all types of axial and radial turbines including gas, steam, hydro, and wind.  Markets served include energy, oil & gas, and aerospace & defense, among others.  MSI performs 3-D finite element analysis of stress, deflection, and vibration.  CFD is used to perform hydrodynamic evaluation from meanline performance analysis to complex analyses of primary and secondary flow fields through all stationary and rotating components.  Detailed experimental evaluations can also be performed in the field or in MSI’s laboratory test rigs.  Testing capabilities include performance and efficiency quantification, rotor pressure oscillation as reported by multi-channel telemetry, vibration modal testing, and vibration operating deflection shapes (ODS) testing.

Design, Analyze, and Build a Prototype Radial Gas Turbine

MSI was tasked with designing a prototype high speed radial gas turbine to operate at 40,000 RPM with R-134a as the working fluid. The goal was to produce 20 HP with a compact turbine and integrated generator unit.

Rerate of a Francis Hydro Turbine

MSI was tasked with evaluating a 1920s Francis style hydro-turbine runner in order to replace the aging original ones at a plant near the Hudson River in Upstate NY. A new blade design improved runner efficiency as well as decreased the blade count from 16 to 15, reducing the runner weight.
